New British Curriculum for Physician Training Requires Competence in Interactive Telecommunications

Britain’s new national curriculum for physician education will require training in the use of modern interactive telecommunications (IT) systems. The 2-year “foundation programme syllabus”, as the training curriculum is called, requires new physicians to show competence in communication and consultation skills, patient safety, and teamwork, as well as in the more traditional components of medical training.

Although it covers specific IT competencies under the general rubric of “appropriate IT skills”, the new curriculum specifies a number of clinical areas in which physicians will be expected to show competence, including the requirement that physicians understand and apply “the principles of medical data and information management and maintenance of updated, accurate, legible, and attributable clinical records”, use of the British National Formulary, and computer-based prescribing.

Professor Sir Alan Craft, Chairman of the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges, calls the new curriculum an important accomplishment, pointing out that it heralds a new era in medical training and education in the United Kingdom and that physicians who pass through the system will be competent to practice in Britain’s modern healthcare service.
